Persian Cats - Feeding, and Litter Box Training

Now that you have selected your Persian kitten, you will need to gather the proper tools and equipment for the kitten's care. Your Persian kitten demands extra care and attention, especially in the area of grooming. This article will focus upon feeding and litter box training.

Basic supplies include:

o Food and water bowls (preferably not made of plastic)

o Litter box

o Grooming supplies

o A specific place to sleep

o A sturdy scratching post

o Plenty of kitty toys

o A cat carrier

Things to take into consideration when purchasing food and water bowls are:

o Be sure they are correct height and size

o Kittens need bowls low-to-the-ground yet wide enough so they won't be tipped over easily

o Place food and water bowls in a low-traffic area

o Avoid plastic bowls as they sometimes emit an odor and can cause feline acne if the rim gets rough or cracked

o Avoid ceramic (this material may contain lead and can break)

o Stainless steel is probably the best selection (it is easy to clean and dishwasher safe, does not have any of the problems plastic and ceramic dishes have)

Keep Persian kitten water and feeding bowls sterilized.

Persian kittens will need fresh water at all times. Change the water daily.

Options of feeding include:

o Leaving food out all the time

o If obesity is feared, a specific schedule is advisable

o Use the recommendation of your breeder or vet

As for the type of food: Please follow the link in the resource box of this article to learn about an all natural, high quality diet for your Persian kitten. If you will follow the links, you will find an informative video. Always start out with the food your breeder used. If the food is changed, do it gradually.

Hairball treatments are discussed in the web site I recommend for care of your Persian kitten (follow the link in this article to find more information).

Litter Box Training:

It is said that most cats instinctively know to use a litter box. Some basic tips include:

o When your Persian kitten first arrives, introduce him or her to the litter box first.

o Avoid moving the litter box around for decoration purposes. Pick a spot and leave it there.

o All cats are creatures of habit and they do not appreciate change in any of their routines.

o Do not be tempted to buy a certain brand of litter just because it is on sale. Your Persian kitten will surely be upset.

o Start out with the recommendation of your breeder since this is the brand Persian kitten is use to using.

o Try to place the litter box in a secluded, out-of-the-way area

o Persian kittens may need a smaller box at first so they can easily climb in and out of it

o As the Persian kitten matures into a cat, a bigger box will be necessary

o The litter boxes with a hood is probably the best choice because some cats can be standing inside the litter box yet actually eliminate outside. A litter box with a hood will prevent these accidents.

o Provide one litter box per cat. Cats do not like sharing their litter boxes

o Be aware to the fact that in a multi-cat household, the dominant cat will usually "mark" all the boxes in the home to show who is in charge

o Regardless of Mr. or Mrs. in Charge Cat, having multiple litter boxes, one for each cat, is still the best course of action.

o Cats are fastidiously clean animals, therefore, you must keep their litter boxes tidy as well

o A litter scooper that you can use to dispose of solid waste daily is necessary

o You will probably need to change the litter daily or else the Persian kitten may decide to find a cleaner, more suitable facility (a place you will not like)

I just recently saw an interesting litter box system. This box automatically scoops up old litter and provides new litter each time the cat uses the box. The box uses a disposable tray filled with litter that needs only removed and discarded monthly. However, this particular system did not have a hood, and was expensive. You can purchase the hood as an accessory (of course).

If you have several Persian cats in the household, this may not be an economical litter box system. Monthly charge for disposable trays of litter was around $20. The entire system with one month supply was over $100. Please follow the link in this article to learn where to purchase this item. You will also find additional information regarding litter box systems.

Your litter box will be a major important item. It is probably wise to learn what is available before Persian kitten arrives.

Tidy Cats Power Blend Premium Scoop Litter For Multiple Cats

Tidy Cats Power Blend Premium Scoop Litter For Multiple Cats Review

This stuff is amazing! It was a little bit expensive but the 8lb container said that it lasted a month. My kitty seems to fly through litter (I hate stinky litter) - so I picked this kind up. I can't say enough good things about it. The pee gets absorbed into the crystals - no smell and no need to scoop! The crystals change color - I think it will eventually show that it needs to be changed (it has been 2 weeks and it hasn't smelled yet).

What I didn't expect was that there is practically no tracking. My kitty was horrible about it. I have a small apartment so his litter box is in the bathroom. I would have to tell people to wait to use the bathroom until I had a chance to sweep it all up. Not anymore!!! This stuff doesn't get stuck between his little toes so it doesn't get tracked around - in the 2 weeks we have had it there I have found only 5 or 6 tiny little crystals in his track mat and no where else.

I will never buy any other kind of litter again! Previously I really liked the Tidy Cat Small Spaces, but now it doesn't even compare to this. I'm so glad that I took the chance!

Tidy Cat BREEZE Cat Refill Litter Pellets

Tidy Cat BREEZE Cat Refill Litter Pellets

I have used many Kitty Litter products. Numerous brands of litter and litter boxes. They all left an odor in the room no matter how often you cleaned them. But then I tried your product, Tidy Cat Breeze Litter
Pellets. THESE ARE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! They live up to all of the claims of no odor and no mess. My husband has a very sensitive nose and he can not smell the litter box at all. The cat does not kick out any of the pellets like regular litter so there is no mess around on the floor. She does not even track any of the pellets out of the box like the regular litter. PLEASE DO NOT DISCONTINUE THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!ITS GREAT!!!!!

Tidy Cats Breeze Litter Box System

Tidy Cats Breeze Litter Box System:I've had this for a few weeks, and I'm really happy with it.

The hugest advantage to this system is the urine is separated from the 'litter' and odor is greatly reduced. The litter consist of pellets similar in shape/size to the wood-based natural litters, but they are of a hard clay, which doesn't break down with moisture, and they keep their shape. Thus, the urine drains straight down through a grid to the pad (in its own slide-out drawer), and the poo stays on top to be scooped away.

The pee will not ferment with the characteristic stench, and you don't have to deal with clumping litter which doesn't really clump, and is just plain stinky and messy to scoop up.

The proprietary 'pee' pads are kind of like a giant maxi pad, and absorb a lot of liquid. Also, the bottom side of the pad is plastic, and the pad fits into the tray in a way that the plastic is upturned to keep the tray itself dry. Maintenance consists of merely taking the drawer out to the trash, and sliding the pad out, putting in a new one, and sliding the drawer back into the bottom of the box.

The litter itself are hard pellets, which hardly get tracked, and it is 100% dustless. A pellet or two stick to paws, but are easily picked up and tossed back into the box. Scooping is easy, and if the poo is dry, you can kind of shake it around in the scoop to knock off some of the pellets, then throw it in the trash instead of wasting water with a toilet flush.

It takes mere seconds to maintain the box vs. 10 minutes of scooping and scraping soggy clumping litter which doesn't really clump, but falls apart.

When it's time to change the litter (once a month), it just pours into the trash, no scraping the soggy wet concrete of old.

Some say you get a 'poo' smell, since kitties can't bury it quite like they did with the old type of litter, but I'll take that over the overpowering stench of fermented urine any day. And, the smell goes away quite shortly, just like human smell in the bathroom. Note that you should just use one bag of the pellets in the box, the litter won't be as deep. I just give the box a quick shake daily to even it back out.

Cat adaption to the new box: This won't work for everyone, but this is what I did: I set up the new Breeze system next to the old box (which was fairly gross, as I let it get bad) to see what would happen. I placed a clump of the old litter into the new box to let him know it was 'his.' My 9 year old fellow was pretty much using the new box right away (probably out of curiousity more than anything). After 3 days or so, I removed the old box and inserted it directly into the garbage, never to be dealt with again. No problems, 100% compliance on Max's part.

If Tidy Cats came out with a fully hooded version of the box, it would be great for the folks who have standing pee-ers, but my fellow doesn't do that, so I'm lucky.

Finally, some say the pellets and pads are expensive, but I estimate the cost as about equal to the old style of box over the long run - and the convenience and ease of maintenance should erase any other doubt.

Also, this system has the potential of keeping tons of conventional clay litter out of landfills.

Highly recommended.
